Издание на английском языке
IMO adopted the International Code of Safety for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS Code) in May 2026. Effective from 1 July 2026, this non-mandatory Code provides a framework for integrating autonomous and remotely controlled ships into international shipping.
The Code addresses ship design, construction, operation and certification, aiming to achieve safety and environmental standards equivalent to those of conventional vessels. It complements existing maritime regulations, including SOLAS, and primarily applies to cargo ships covered by SOLAS Chapter I.
Key principles include risk assessment, clearly defined operating modes and limits, and procedures for responding to conditions outside those limits. Human oversight remains essential: the master retains overall responsibility even when ashore, while remote operations centres should be assessed, certified and operated under an effective safety management system.
Experience gained through its voluntary application will support the development of a future mandatory MASS Code.
