The International Code for Fire Safety Systems (FSS Code) was adopted by the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) at its seventy-third session in December 2000, by resolution MSC.98(73) , in order to provide international standards for the fire safety systems and equipment required by chapter 11-2 of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS Convention) . The Code was made mandatory under SOLAS amendments to the Convention adopted by the MSC at the same session, by resolution MSC.99(73) , and entered into force on 1 July 2002.
In order to make this publication as comprehensive as possible for use by equipment and systems manufacturers, shipowners and operators, shipyards, classification societies and Administrations, all related fire safety standards and guidelines adopted by either the Assembly or the MSC and referred to in the FSS Code have been incorporated, as appropriate, in this publication for the guidance and convenience of users.1
This publication also contains the unified interpretations of the FSS Code regulations, as approved by MSC since 2004, to facilitate global and consistent implementation of the requirements of the Code. The unified interpretations are compiled in a separate section located between the FSS Code and the Fire safety standards and guidelines. Cross-references to the unified interpretations are placed below the paragraph or above the group of paragraphs to which they apply. They are also numbered by chapter and cross-referenced to the regulation they clarify. Unified interpretations that are obsolete and no longer applicable to the current provisions of the Code have been excluded from this edition.
The circulars and resolutions set forth within the fire safety standards and guidelines section have been consolidated to incorporate relevant amendments where applicable. The associated cover circular or resolution represents the original version only. The associated covers of subsequent instruments amending the original text have been omitted for the sake of brevity and economy.
