This document supplements existing IMO requirements regarding barriers and equipment used for the safe embarkation and disembarkation of pilots on ships. Its primary objective is to clarify these requirements to ensure the efficiency and safety of pilot disembarkation and embarkation operations, as well as the proper use of the equipment. The document addresses such important aspects as the use of manila ropes, attachment to the deck and hull, access arrangements, hatch design and placement, wear and tear and protective elements, and the interaction between ladders and other auxiliary equipment. An example of a ladder hatch design is provided for additional information. This document is intended for professionals responsible for safety and compliance and serves as a guide for improving the reliability and efficiency of pilot disembarkation and embarkation procedures.
