It is the sad reality of our industry that lifeboat accidents continue to occur, with procedural and design issues causing unacceptable injuries and fatalities. I welcome the publication of this book as being both timely and necessary.
This publication is a good teaching aid for crew, containing 20 incident case studies and detailed explanations of the regulations regarding survival craft release and retrieval systems. It also contains up-to-date guidance on a variety of issues relevant to lifeboat safety, including crew welfare measures that should be taken, explanations of how to operate and launch lifeboats, and instructions around best practice in maintenance and repair of lifeboats and related appliances.
This publication sheds light onto the issues with lifeboat design. It is this insufficient design that is leading to seafarers being incorrectly trained and therefore being ill prepared. We simply cannot have this lack of precision in 2017. This only goes to highlight how a lack of familiarity with lifeboat systems can potentially result in loss of life and damage to vessels. There have been 145 serious injuries and 60 fatalities recorded since 2005, all a result of lifeboat launches. Seafarers who familiarise themselves with the recommendations and advice contained within this publication will go some way towards making potentially tragic incidents far less frequent until we change the design of lifeboats and their release mechanisms. This publication is a valuable addition to the wealth of literature aimed at ensuring best practice at sea, but we must always look at the source of the problem and fix that, rather than make excuses and compromise the safety of our seafarers.
