The book tells about the actions of the German battle cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in the Atlantic during the Second World War. Under the command of Admiral Lutyens, they attacked merchant ships, avoiding collisions with British warships. Having successfully sunk many ships, these cruisers returned to Brest for repairs and preparations for new raids, which posed a threat to British shipping lanes. In response, the British command appealed to the Royal Air Force to eliminate this threat.
