The book provides an in-depth account of the discovery and excavation of the wreck of La Belle, a ship from the ill-fated French expedition led by La Salle to establish a colony near the Mississippi River, which instead ended up in Matagorda Bay, Texas. Under the leadership of archaeologist James E. Bruseth, the Texas Historical Commission undertook a complex excavation project between 1996 and 1997, using a steel cofferdam to create a dry excavation environment. The ship's hold revealed over 1.8 million artifacts essential for the colonists' survival in the New World. This extensive documentation highlights the significance of the find and the challenges involved in cataloging and conserving such a vast array of historical materials, marking it as one of the most important archaeological discoveries in North America during the twentieth century.
