Recently, in the maritime industry, decarbonization has become a trend as a measure against global warming owing to the glowing worldwide momentum for the realization of a decarbonized society. IMO adopted the “2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships” at MEPC 80 in July 2023, and revised the target upwardly to reach net-zero GHG emissions by around 2050 at the latest.
To achieve the target, in the maritime industry, the fuel shift is trying to be forwarded by conversion from conventional fossil fuels to alternative fuels with lower GHG emissions such as hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol. Meanwhile, the widespread availability of their' alternative fuels may take a long time since there are challenges such as the development of safety utilization technology and the establishment of a supply chain. Therefore, biofuels are attracting attention as drop-in fuels usable in place of petroleum fuels without major modifications to existing marine diesel engines and machinery' facilities.
