This book consists of three parts. Prior to “Part I, Techniques for Ship Handling”, the “Introduction” outlines important issues as a preliminary guide for readers of this book. The “Introduction” allows readers to gain a background view of “clarifying the role of humans in system operation”, which this book is aiming at. This view is a new one, not found in previous publications.
This book aims to provide an overall explanation of the techniques demanded of seafarers while engaged in handling a ship. Accordingly, the necessary techniques for achieving safe navigation, which have been developed by seafarers over a long period of time, have been organized to show the importance of those techniques that seafarers need to accomplish in actual situations. It is hoped that the systematization introduced in this book is taking a step forward in clarifying the overall structure of the techniques for achieving safe navigation.
