Current information on the world's navies appears under the following headings:
Major matters: summaries by country of the year's significant naval events.
Pennant list of major surface ships: in numerical order of pennant number, indicating type and nationality. Soviet ships are not included as their pennant numbers change frequently.
Tables: statistical summaries on comparative strengths and composition of majorfleets and types of associated equipment: naval aircraft, anti-submarine warfare weapons, electronic warfare/countermeasures, guns, missiles, radar, sonar and torpedoes held by the principal navies.
Recognition silhouettes: grouped according to similarity of shape to aid visual identification (notto same scale).
Ship reference section: detailed information and illustrations of naval forces alphabetically by country. Within each country information is presented where available as follows:
Introduction, including listings of Naval Boards, diplomatic representatives, personnel, strength of the fleet, deletions, pennant list etc.
Detailed information of the fleet's ships. The order varies according to the size and variety of the fleet: submarines, aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, frigates, corvettes, amphibious forces, light forces, mine warfare forces, survey vessels, service forces, tenders and tugs. Other craft, eg training ships, floating docks and hovercraft, may be listed depending on the size of the fleet.
