The Atlas of the Oceans is a basic scientific work summarizing the latest knowledge of the natural phenomena and processes taking place in the World Ocean, and in the overlying atmosphere. The charts in the Atlas have been compiled from data assembled in the USSR from Soviet and foreign sources collected over the whole historical era of ocean research. Observational materials of coastal and drifting stations and satellite data were completely used.
The use of modern methods of data processing has facilitated the analysis of a vast amount of hydrometeorological information, and from this material the compilation of charts presenting a number of phenomena and ocean processes. This gives the Atlas certain features of an original scientific work.
The Atlas is intended for scientific workers, officers of the Soviet Army and Navy, captains and navigators of the merchant and fishing fleet. The vast information is that of the great cognitive interest and can be used as an educational aid.
