The Yachtmaster Offshore course is part of an extensive voluntary training scheme run by the Royal Yachting Association ‘to encourage high standards of seamanship and navigation among yachtsmen and women’ and avoid unnecessary regulation. Each year thousands of yachtsmen and women attend evening classes as a prep ar ation for the coveted Yachtmaster qualification – or perhaps just as a change from learning French. This book is unashamedly a ‘crammer’ for that course – updated in this new edition to incorporate the latest developments in electronic navigation and safety procedures.
The RYA prefers not to talk about its shorebased courses as an examination process – it merely awards ‘certificates of satisfactory completion’. But whatever you call the exercises and assessment papers, they strike most students as being exams in a format they may not have faced since leaving school. Indeed, some of the exercises have to be taken under invigilation and require detailed knowledge that needs ‘swotting up’ beforehand. And that is where this book comes in.
We have tried to help by looking for the logic as well as the facts, and eliminating unnecessary information to concentrate on the essentials of the RYA syllabus. In each of the main sections – navigation, weather, safety and seagoing practice – we have tried to do four things:
- Provide all the essential information.
- Organise it in a digestible form that makes learning and revision easier – in fact, the book is small enough to slip in your pocket to skim through in the lunch hour, on the train home, or just before going into the exam.
- Advise on exam tactics.
- Set all this in a practical seagoing perspective.
No single textbook is a substitute for the extensive background reading needed, let alone for the instruction itself. But we can provide a skeleton, waiting to be fleshed out by teaching, reading and practical experience, because ultimately there is also no substitute for seatime.
